Wrestler Vinesh Phogat gets engaged at Delhi airport after winning Asian Games gold

Vinesh made an official announcement of the engagement on social media, saying this was the best decision she ever took. "Glad you pinned me for life," she wrote.

Vinesh shared this picture of her family members after the engagement ceremony. Vinesh’s uncle Mahavir Phogat and Somvir’s mother were present as the couple exchanged rings in the parking lot outside the IGI airport in New Delhi.

There was a lot of media present to welcome Vinesh after her heroics in Jakarta. But they got much more than they'd expected with the sudden ceremony at the airport.

Somvir, who has known Vinesh for the past seven years, is employed with the Indian Railways as Travelling Ticket Examiner and is a former national-level wrestler himself.

Saturday, the day Vinesh returned home, was also the day she turned 24. Here she is seen cutting her birthday/engagement cake at the airport.

Vinesh seemed elated through the night. She stepped out of the airport with her gold medal and the Indian flag wrapped around her neck. She was greeted by fans with loud cheers and flowers as she distributed sweets amongst them.

Fans couldn't get enough of the wonderfully surprising moment. There were tons of supporters who cheered away and clicked plenty of pictures as India's star athlete smiled from ear to ear.

Vinesh made the country proud by becoming the first Indian woman wrestler to win an Asian Games medal. She claimed gold by winning the 50 kg category event. Here she is seen posing on the podium with her medal.
