A weightlifter who had become the first Indian woman to win an Olympic medal for India was Karnam Malleswari.

 

She had lifted 110 kg in the snatch category and 130 kg in the clean and jerk to clinch the bronze medal in the 54 kg category.

India had its best-ever performance at Olympics at the London Olympics 2012. The country had won six medals of which two were won by the girls.

 

One of them was by Manipur-born boxer Mary Kom. Her run to the final was halted by eventual champion Nicola Adams of Great Britain in the semis, but she won the bronze medal.

Saina Nehwal was another athlete who had made India proud and had became the first Indian badminton player to win an Olympic medal.

 

She won after her opponent, China's Wang Xin, was forced to retire hurt during the match in the semi-final.

Rio Games also saw India winning two medals, both by women. PV Sindhu had reached the final of the 2016 Summer Games before she lost to Spain's Carolina Marin in an 83-minute clash.

After Sindhu, it was Sakshi Malik's chance to make India proud. She had become the first female Indian wrestler to win an Olympic medal. 

 

She had defeated Kyrgyzstan's Aisuluu Tynybekova to win a bronze medal in the 58 kg category.

Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu started off India's campaign at the Tokyo 2020 with a bang. She put behind the disappointment of Rio 2016 and lifted a total of 202 kg to win the silver medal in the women's 49 kg category. 

 

It was her first Olympic medal and she became only the second Indian weightlifter after Karnam Malleswari to win an Olympic medal.

PV Sindhu had scripted history after she defeated He Bing Jiao of China to become the first Indian woman to win two individual Olympic medals. 

 

Sindhu won the bronze medal after a 21-13 and 21-15 win. She had earlier suffered a heart-breaking loss to world no.1 Tai Tzu Ying in the semi-final as she lost 18-21, 12-21.

Boxer Lovlina Borgohain made sure her debut at the Summer Games counts as she has been assured of at least a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics.

She defeated Chinese Taipei's Nien-Chin Chen in the quarter-finals of the women's 69 kg category and will be playing her medal bout on August 4.
