Italy claimed the European Championship for the first time since 1968 as penalties came back to haunt England at Wembley on Sunday, Gianluigi Donnarumma saving twice as the Azzurri won a shootout 3-2 after the game finished 1-1 following extra time.

The giant goalkeeper saved from Jadon Sancho and, decisively, Bukayo Saka after Marcus Rashford hit the post, as Federico Bernardeschi, Leonardo Bonucci, and Domenico Berardi all scored for the Italians in the shootout.

Luke Shaw had given England a dream start with a superb goal after two minutes but Italy, who offered almost nothing in response in the first half, gradually took command and deservedly levelled through Bonucci after 67 minutes.

The two players he sent on late in extra time with penalties in mind missed their penalties, as did 19-year-old Saka, who crumpled under the pressure of taking the final kick.

Italy, have now won five and lost six of their 10 major tournament shootouts, including one win and one loss in World Cup finals, while England’s dismal record now reads seven losses from nine.

While the result of the clash was out, the England supporters did not take it nicely. Here are a list of bad things the host fans have done during the course of EURO 2020. (Inputs from Reuters)

A young German fan was seen crying on TV and on the big screen at Wembley after Germany was knocked out of Euro 2020 by England.

The father-of-two was targeted by trolls and had his personal details leaked online.

On Friday, South Wales Police said online abuse has been reported to the force and they are "providing support to the victim and his family".

"An investigation is now underway to identify those responsible", a statement read.

An unknown spectator flashed a laser pen at Denmark goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel's face while his side's semi-final clash against England in Euro 2020.

The incident took place in the extra time, moments before England captain Harry Kane was to take a penalty. Replays of the spot-kick show a laser clearly being pointed towards the player's eye.

While Schmeichel did save the penalty before Kane scored on the rebound, the goalkeeper wasn't aware of the distraction attempt.

England won the game in the extra time by 2-1 to qualify for their first final since the 1966 World Cup.

3. Racial abuse and insulting Italy flag

The English supporters, who could not digest the loss, saw them unnecessarily attack the Italian fans. They not just hit their Italian counterparts but then there was a lot of racial abuse and stomping of the Italian national flag as well.

Some were also seen attempting to set the cloth alight but failed, while one fan could be seen spitting on the Italian flag whilst another stepped on it repeatedly.

4. Ticketless fans trying to enter Wembley Stadium

A small number of English fans were also able to force their way into Wembley Stadium ahead of the final on Sunday, London police had said.

"Earlier this afternoon there was a breach of security at Wembley Stadium, which resulted in a small number of people getting into the stadium without a ticket," the Metropolitan Police said.

"Officers worked closely with security officials to prevent any further breaches. "We will also support action by Wembley Stadium officials to identify those without tickets and eject them."

England`s Football Association released a statement in the early hours of Monday morning condemning the online racist abuse of players following the team`s penalty shootout loss to Italy in the Euro 2020 final on Sunday.

The sides drew 1-1 after extra time and Italy won the shootout 3-2, with England players Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, and Bukayo Saka, who are all Black, missing spot-kicks.

"The FA strongly condemns all forms of discrimination and is appalled by the online racism that has been aimed at some of our England players on social media," the statement said.

"We could not be clearer that anyone behind such disgusting behaviour is not welcome in following the team. We will do all we can to support the players affected while urging the toughest punishments possible for anyone responsible."
