Chinese club Guangzhou Evergrande is constructing world's largest stadium for $1.7 billion
The new-look stadium will be designed like a lotus, an inspiration which comes from Guangzhou’s status as China’s ‘Flower City’.
The construction of the Chinese Super League (CSL) side Guangzhou Evergrande's brand new football stadium is well and truly underway.
The new 100,000-capacity stadium will be a straight of the art modern venue, which will also be the largest stadium in the world, will cost a staggering $1.7 billion (12 billion yuan) to build.
The new-look stadium will be designed like a lotus, an inspiration which comes from Guangzhou’s status as China’s ‘Flower City’.
“Evergrande Stadium will become a new world-class landmark comparable to the Sydney Opera House and Burj Khalifa in Dubai, and an important symbol of Chinese football to the world,” Xia Haijun, president of real estate conglomerate Evergrande, was quoted as saying.
The club hosted an official ceremony to launch the new stadium and also released pictures and an animated video of how the stadium will look like upon its full construction.
This new venue is also another example of the country's push to promote football in China. In their attempts to attract more football fans, the clubs have bought in numerous big-money super-star names in Paulinho, Talisca, Hulk, Oscar, Marko Arnautovic, Stephan El Shaarawy, Marouane Fellaini, Marek Hamsik, etc in recent years.
Guangzhou Evergrande's new stadium is scheduled to be ready by the end of 2022.
According to ESPN's reports, Xia also claimed that Evergrande plans to build three to five more stadiums across the country with capacities of 80-100,000.
The eight-times Chiese Super League champions, in the past nine years, averaged just under 46,000 attendance during their 2019 campaign.
