Real Madrid are the most successful club when it comes to the UEFA Champions League tournament. Real Madrid have won the trophy a record 13 times, including the first five seasons on the trot and this is a record that has never been broken in the history of the UEFA Champions League. However, in the 2020/21 season of the UEFA Champions League, Real Madrid are on the cusp of notoriety. The 13-time champions are on the brink of being eliminated from the last 16 for the first-time ever heading into their final league game against Borussia Moenchengladbach on Thursday. Real Madrid are in Group B of the UEFA Champions League and this is the only group where all the four teams involved are with a chance of going into the last 16.

With Manchester United, one of the top clubs of Europe being eliminated from the last 16 race with a loss to RB Leipzig, a similar fate for Real Madrid could be catastrophic. Having already started their La Liga season on a poor note, Real Madrid’s UEFA Champions League downturn could have serious consequences for Zinedine Zidane’s tenure. With their arch-rivals FC Barcelona already qualifying despite a 0-2 loss to Juventus, the pressure on Real Madrid is massive heading into their game against Borussia Moenchengladbach.

What Real Madrid need to do?

The final league games of the UEFA Champions League will take place on Thursday before the draw to determine the last 16 playing scenarios is decided on December 14. Chelsea, Sevilla, Barcelona, Juventus, Man City, Liverpool, Porto, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Lazio and RB Leipzig have already qualified. Atletico Madrid, Red Bull Salzburg, Monchengladbach, Shakhtar Donetsk, Real Madrid, Inter Milan, Atalanta, Ajax are the remaining teams in the fray for four spots, with Paris Saint-Germain all but through to the last 16 following Manchester United’s loss.

However, Real Madrid are in Group B and all the teams in the group, Borussia Moenchengladbach, Inter Milan and Shakhtar Donetsk are separated by just three points. All four teams are still in with a chance of qualification. The equation is simple if a winner emerges from the game between Real Madrid and Moenchengladbach. The winner will top the section. However, Moenchengladbach only need a point to progress, although that will also suit Madrid, as long as Inter Milan overcome Shakhtar Donestsk at San Siro.

However, Zinedine Zidane's side will finish bottom if both they and Shakhtar lose, an unthinkable outcome for a team who have progressed from all 24 groups they have been in during the modern era of the Champions League. The Ukrainians, meanwhile, will progress with a win, while a draw will also suffice if Real do not win. As for Antonio Conte's Inter side, they will have to win. However, that scenario may not be enough if Real Madrid and Monchengladbach play out a draw in the Spanish capital.
