On September 19, 2010, a shooting incident took place near the historic Jama Masjid in New Delhi, in which two Taiwanese tourists were injured. Barely two hours later, a pressure cooker bomb exploded inside a car in the same area.

The attack, only days before the Commonwealth Games (October 3-14), has triggered concerns of safety before the mega event.

The Delhi police has said it does not suspect the role of any organised terrorist group in the fitring incident and the explosion. But the outlawed Indian Mujahideen is suspected to be behind the attack as an e-mail was sent in the name of the group to the BBC and several other media organisations saying, “In the name of Allah, the attack is a tribute to Atif Amin and Mohammed Sajid.” Amin and Sajid were Indian Mujaheedin operatives killed by the police in the Batla House encounter soon after the Delhi serial blasts of September 2008. Initially, even sources in the home ministry acknowledged that the modus operandi in the firing carried the signature of Indian Mujahideen.

“We are warning you. If you have the guts, then organise the Commonwealth Games... We know that preparations are on full swing. Be prepared... We are also making preparations... The participants in the Games will be responsible for the outcome,” the e-mail said. The IM statement also denounced the killings of civilians in the Kashmir Valley.
