Though mobile phones have become popular among people, but when it comes to awareness regarding the ill effects of radiation emitted from mobile receiver towers, people have just started realising its demerits. Though slowly, the subject is now gaining importance across twin cities of Kalyan and Dombivli.

Citizens claim that the authorities have turned a deaf ear to their pleas regarding precautionary measures to be undertaken by cellular operators against emission of radiation from towers. With the rise in number of cellular phones, there has been a corresponding rise in the number of towers installed by cellular services provider in order to offer better connectivity. “In April, we had approached the gram panchayat which is our governing body regarding the ill effects of radiation emitted from the mobile receiver towers. However, they passed the buck on to the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC),” claimed Ramakant Patil (name changed), resident of MIDC area in Dombivli East.

He added, “Earlier, we weren't aware about the ill effects of the harmful radiation, so we kept quiet. But now that we know about it, we are agitated.”

Meanwhile, another resident of Ayre Road requesting anonymity said, “Hazards from radiation emitted from cellular towers can cause cancer and brain tumour, miscarriage and can lead to chronic insomnia. Person exposed to such radiation can suffer from fatigue, cataract and reduced mental alertness.”

Kalyan-based businessman Zuber Khan has started an awareness drive among citizens about one-and-half year ago. “I realised the ill effects of the towers and want people living on top floors to be aware of the menace. Fortunately, many people have realised and even some buildings in Dombivli, Kalyan and Mira Road have stymied the plans to install mobile towers on their terraces,” Zuber said.

According to Zuber, radiation from mobile towers can cause harmful cancers in humans.

Some Rotary clubs from Bandra and Worli have invited Zuber to conduct an awareness campaign in their areas. “I would like to do it if people are really going to save their lives by just saying no to mobile towers,” he said.

According to IIT Mumbai Prof Girish Kumar, an expert in anti-radiation technology, the radiation from mobile towers is harmful for human body (which contains around 70 % water) or any living thing. “For children, it can cause damage in parts of the body which contain more quantity of water such as brain and eyes,” added Girish Kumar.

He added, “If the tower is erected on a school building, it will certainly harm the students who stay in the premises for close to six hours.”
