Mumbai University's initiative to have a separate cell for ragging is a good step. Many times, students don't know whom to report an incident; thus giving their seniors a free hand in ragging them. But now if students know whom to contact and know that their problems will be heard then the cases of ragging will decrease eventually. The authorities will be taking charge this time is also a good move.

For instance, the anti-ragging cell would be calling up colleges every fortnight to check on any incident of ragging. This would mean that colleges will have to keep track of such incidents in their campuses. Many colleges do not have a department or a person in charge of dealing with such incidents. Now, all colleges will have to create a structure wherein any student who has a grievance of ragging can go and report it. They will have to ensure that the victim’s identity is safeguarded. I just hope that now more students will come out of their shell and report the bullies without any fear.

We have done it with students’ squad
We had an anti-ragging law earlier as well. The university has now set up a monitoring cell which will coordinate with its affiliated colleges to implement anti-ragging measures. The cell will call for reports from the head of the institution regarding the activities of the anti-ragging squad every fortnightly. In spite of all such measures, I strongly feel that it works only when students themselves get involved in checking incidents of ragging.

Students understand the problems of co-students better than any official deputed for anti-ragging prevention. Students know more about the anti-social elements in the college.

Since such squad of students and teachers have been formed in our college no incidence of ragging has been reported. They are against ragging and students themselves are more vigilant. With such initiatives there is a friendly ambience, and all juniors and seniors are in harmony and supportive of each other.
