Unique IDs for local trains may not solve woes of city’s lifeline
The Indian Railways is planning to have a unique national identity for every local train on the basis of its route. It will facilitate people with train details via SMS.

Trains running late, indicator displaying wrong information, incorrect announcements, trains getting cancelled or delayed — this is part of the everyday commuter’s life. People are immune to such delays and are used to running around in case of last-minute changes in trains. The most common being the change from nine-coach to 12-coach.
Tanya J, a resident of Thane who travels to Malad everyday, says, “Trains are the best and the fastest way to commute in the city. However, there is no accuracy in the train timings. Nor are proper announcements made. Commuters often feel helpless as they know the uncertainty surrounding the train timings.” So apart from the filth, the torn seats, and the graffiti on the trains, people also have to put with the confusion caused by the train timings and locations.
For instance, trains to Ambarnath, which run on the central line, are indicated by an 'A' as are trains to Andheri which ply on the western line. Such trains can lead to confusion among commuters, especially those who are new to the city as they both start and terminate at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST).
When Antara Telore was new in the city, she was excited about travelling by the famed Mumbai local. But she was surprised to see people often running around at the change of sudden announcement.
“Most of the people on the station don't have proper knowledge about other trains. To add to that, the announcements are done in three different languages, so before it is clear, the train already leaves the station,” says an exasperated Antara who travels from Bhayander to CST.
Rather than totally shunning the new concept, let us weigh the pros and cons. This is because any new technology or system takes time to get implemented as well as for people to get used to it. The authorities, too, are looking at improving the services for commuters.
