The Burhaniyah Business Counseling Centre (BBCC) is a non-profit company for the economic enhancement of the Dawoodi Bohras in the trade, industry, and service sector. The 52nd Dai-al-Mutlaq, Dr Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin, the spiritual leader of the worldwide Dawoodi Bohra community, has emphasised on the economic upliftment and welfare of the Dawoodi Bohra community. Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin has counselled and assisted the community members to indulge in business and self-employment. The BBCC was officially established on July 6, 2007 in Mumbai.

“The BBCC’s vision is to help build a society where all the Bohra community members have flourishing businesses, run by inculcating modern business practices. For achieving these goals, the BBCC organises seminars, counselling and an international industrial trade fair, the right platforms for business networking, promoting entrepreneurial spirit, and showcasing to the world what varied business opportunities could be offered to all,” says Dr Abbas Merchant, joint secretary, BBCC. They also assist in providing interest-free loans to entrepreneurs for start-ups and expansions.

“We plan to expand the operations of the BBCC to more cities in India and other countries. We have organised a seminar in Dubai and in another year’s time, we plan to cover 10 cities in India”, said Dr Abbas.

“The objective of these exhibitions and seminars is to act as a facilitator and an enterprise service provider by giving advice in the matters of investment, production, administration, marketing, human resources, financial management, international tax regulations, tariff/duty policies and international business law matters. Such initiatives provide a platform for networking and expanding businesses and inculcating professionalism,” Dr Abbas elaborates.  Also during such seminars, exhibitions and counselling sessions, experts consult the young enthusiasts and assist them in getting interest-free loans from the Burhani Qardhan Hasanah trust for expansion and diversification.

The BBCC acts as a bridge between different entrepreneurs wanting to do business together. There are many businessmen who have business ideas and proposals and who need business partners or guidance to execute their ventures. BBCC links up the business ideas with the resources and tools to convert their proposals into reality.

Coming from various professional walks of life, the BBCC members strive towards providing better advice and facilitate modern business practices at the grassroots level. The efforts are to leverage on the potent intellectual capability residing within the community for mutual gains.

“The BBCC also works towards women’s empowerment. Workshops are organised for women, where they are taught different ways of earning a livelihood, like stitching, embroidery and sketching, to name a few. The work created by them is exhibited at community gatherings for sale; we also place them in different industry sectors which helps them to be self-employed and independent. Women’s education is being promoted among the community members at large”, Dr Abbas added.

The sixth International Industrial Trade and Business Fair was held at the World Trade Centre from July 1-4, 2010. Chief guest Ashok Chavan, chief minister, Maharashtra, inaugurated the EXPO, and Milind Deora, South Mumbai MP, was the guest of honour.
