Inform parents about drunk youths
For most of us, celebration means drinking, eating and going out and some of us know what our limits are whereas some go overboard. People probably drink too much as the atmosphere is so and they get carried away. I think the authorities, especially in the case of youngsters, should instead of putting culprits in jail should fine them heavily and inform their parents or guardians so the elders know what their wards are up to.

Guilty must do community service
Every now and then we hear about cases where people have met with an accident because they were drunk. Even I was a witness to one — a few weeks earlier a high speed SUV crashed outside Marine Lines station as the lady behind the wheel was in an inebriated state. I always make sure that I use a public transport after drinking. Also, apart from a fine and imprisonment, one should also be made to do community service.

Alcohol prices should be increased
Liquor prices should be hiked and that’s the only way I can see people even trying to stop after a certain number of drinks. One of my friends was caught drinking and driving. He was sent to prison for a couple of days and even had to pay a heavy penalty. The incident shook him, but I don’t think many even learn from their mistakes. So, the best way is to make the product costly.

Others are at risk because of a few
People tend to get carried away on New Year’s Eve. Moreover, people end up following what others are doing and sometimes forget about their limits. I know some people who have been caught driving rashly after drinking. This not only causes trouble to them but others — driving or walking. So, apart from keeping a tab on roads, the authorities should also keep a check on pubs and discos and make sure that no mishaps occur.

People need to take responsibility
People need to understand what the ‘legal’ limit is and what is theirs.  One must be able to keep a tab on just how much s/he can drink and when to stop. I believe that at the end of the day, people need to be responsible. Police can fine, authorities can say no to alcohol in clubs on New Year Eve, but none of this will make sense if one is not responsible for his/her safety.
