SPEAK UP
Normally, when one is taking a train, he or she knows where it is going. The indicators on most of the stations are visible.
Don’t think it will make much of a difference
This wouldn’t make a huge difference as people standing at the platform are worried about starting their journey. Normally, when one is taking a train, he or she knows where it is going. The indicators on most of the stations are visible.
What a daily commuter wants is cleaner trains and also only a fixed number of passengers should be allowed. Right now, the trains carry more people than its capacity which leads to over-crowding and pushing which can lead to accidents. For outstation trains there should be a separate track. We need to increase the number of trains too.
Prashant Golecha, Malad
Hygiene and maintenance should be prioritised
If it is implemented then it will definitely make the life of commuters easier. It will be like a blessing if we could just find out details about the train via a SMS.
As a daily commuter, I expect the train services to be provided without any delay which happens on a regular basis causing a lot of grief to the commuters. Also, I request the Indian Railways to look into the hygiene of the local trains. The authorities should look into the cleanliness and maintenance of the local trains as a priority. I would like the authorities to increase the number of compartments for ladies because it gets too crowded during peak hours.
Saloni Rishiraj, Belapur
Will help commuters in the city and across the country
The railways are trying to improve the information system for the commuters and it should be welcomed by all. It will help the commuters if the information is accessible from anyplace. Unique national ID number will certainly diminish the confusion while travelling in the city where indicators display information through abbreviations.
Moreover, it will improve the accountability of railways if the information of local train can be accessed through internet. Apart from this, the railway department should came sure that trains run on time. In the central line the frequency of trains are not good.
Vicky Bajaj, Thane
Focus on improving the standard of the railways
I am not sure if there is a need for a unique national identity for every local train on the basis of its route. Will this really benefit the common man? We need to go to the grassroots and see what would actually benefit the commuters. Security, cleanliness and punctuality are the issues currently that need attention.
Also, it won't be easy to remember the many identification numbers for different trains. We should be reasonable and look at improving the standard of the railways than focusing on new initiatives. The railways are badly managed — there is no proper reservation system. One has to stand in long queues and many people continue to travel ticket less with no worries of being caught. People sitting at the enquiry counter don’t have updated information about the delays and sometimes don't have basic information. Not everyone uses the Interactive Voice Response (IVRS) system.

Need good medical facilities, more foot overbridges
It's a good initiative by the Indian Railways. However, there are various factors that need to be considered. Commuters suffer a lot of confusion because of lack of proper information about a train on the indicator. Accuracy is a big problem commuters face.
We have put up the demands and grievances of commuters and the staff of the railway department to the authorities but there has been no respite. I have been fighting for such issues since eight years. The problem with the railways is that they don't try to improve until there is a complaint and even if activists suggest some methods, they take years to be implemented.
Our population is increasing and with it are the demands for more foot-over bridges, bigger platforms, frequency and number of the trains. Apart from that, amenities for the daily commuters need to be upgraded proactively. Thousands of people die on railway tracks and many get injured but yet we don’t have medical facility for them near stations.
