The government has approved a market-driven increase in the price of petrol and also raised the prices of diesel, cooking gas, and kerosene. The move has political ramifications, but the government is looking at long-term gains in aligning prices to international rates, which are hovering at about $77 a barrel.
Union minister for petroleum and natural gas Murli Deora claimed that the Trinamool Congress and the DMK are okay with the increase in prices of petrol and diesel. But Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee has opposed the increase saying it is against the interests of the common man. The DMK on its part lodged a protest at Friday's meeting of the empowered group of ministers over the steep increase in fuel prices.
Petrol prices will rise by Rs3.50 a litre while kerosene prices will rise by Rs3 a litre. Diesel prices will rise Rs2 a litre for now and will be freed up completely in the future.
Cooking gas also becomes dearer with households having to shell out an additional Rs35 per cylinder.
