Coordination among authorities is essential
In response to ‘Blame game over potholes continues’ (Speak Up, Sept 22)

The priority duty of addressing the problem often takes the rear seat. Difficulties associated with monsoon like water logging, potholes and floods are annual features and Mumbaikars have more or less resigned to their fate. All the same, ‘pothole’ is the direct result of inefficiency in carrying out the earlier repairs. It exhibits lack of sincerity with the chalta hai attitude dominating all over. Long-term solutions are invisible or, rather, they are not even attempted.

Apart from damaging the vehicles, the so-called potholes cause severe back, neck and spine problems and it has been medically opined that spondylosis of cervical spine can be caused by prolonged travel over rough roads, necessitating therapy or even surgery. Cooperation and coordination amongst various authorities are essential instead of passing the buck. The concept of maintenance of streets not only deserves to be focused but also fine-tuned in the genuine interests of the public at large.

Do away with corruption in the corporation
The Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) has totally failed to address the problems of potholes problem. It would have been better if they would have taken suggestions from a panel of experts to tackle this problem rather than just trying the same thing every year.

Our roads are in a pathetic condition and still the matter is ignored every year and taken up only during the monsoons or during festivals like Ganpati. The major reason for the lack of good techniques to plug the potholes in the city is due to high corruption in the corporation.  Instead of using the road laying machine exported from the foreign countries to good use we just depend on manual labour to do the work and fail miserably.
