Digital India and ‘massification’ were some of the buzz words that were over used at the launch of YU’s new smartphone at Hard Rock Café in Gurgaon’s Cyberhub. Positioned as the world’s most affordable 4G smartphone with a HD screen, the Yunique was launched at an aggressive price point of Rs 4,999.

The rumour mill suggested that YU would launch two devices today including a pricier device in the 20,000 plus price band but YU unveiled only one device - the Yunique, at today’s launch event. The device is powered by 1.2 GHz Quad core Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 chipset coupled with 1GB of RAM (DDR 3 / 64-bit architecture). The dual-SIM (two micro-SIM slots) device features 8GB of onboard memory, extendable up to 32GB via support for Micro SD cards.

We spent some time with the device during the launch, the trademark YU camera lens was one of the standout design elements in the all-black matte finish back. The 4.7-inch HD screen (720 x 1280 pixels / 16.7 million colours) with full-lamination technology (for better visibility under direct sunlight)was impressive (312 Pixels per inch) given the Rs 4,999 price point. The Yunique is also one of the only devices at this price point to be reinforced with Gorilla Glass 3.

The device comes with a choice of Android 5.1 (Lollipop) out of the box and Cyanogen OS 12.1 (FOTA). Results (we shot in lowlight at the launch) with the device’s 8MP primary cam were average; the device comes with a 2MP selfie cam. The device is currently available on Snapdeal.com; registrations kick off at 6 pm today with a sale every Tuesday starting on September 15.

Overall the device makes a good first impression and with a Rs 4,999 price point it does look like that YU has hit a sweet spot with the price-value equation for an aspirational buyer. Stay tuned for our deep dive review of the device.
