BJP releases reports, website denouncing her candidature

NEW DELHI: After a protracted proxy war, the BJP on Tuesday officially associated itself with the 'Stop Pratibha' campaign. The party's general secretary Arun Jaitley released a calendar-sized compilation of newspaper articles and reports on UPA nominee Pratibha Patil's questionable financial dealings and those of her family. He also launched a website called "www.knowpratibhapatil.com", which strongly denounces her candidature.

The move to finally come out in the open comes just four days before a crucial meeting of the United National Progressive Alliance (UNPA) to decide the strategy of the Third Front parties for the presidential poll. The BJP is clearly stepping up the pressure on the parties to support Bhairon Singh Shekhawat and give him a fighting chance in the election. Without their vote, which amounts to roughly 1.20 lakh, the numbers are hopelessly against Shekhawat. If the UNPA abstains, he could lose by a margin of around 2 lakh votes.

The numbers of the UNPA are gradually swelling. Farooq Abdullah's National Conference (nearly 4,000 votes) has joined this grouping and Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress is knocking at its doors.
