Woman murdered for refusing sex; paramour arrested

A 44-year-old widow was allegedly murdered by her paramour when she refused to have a physical relationship with him on Thursday afternoon at her residence at Hari Kunj society in Mundhwa area.

The Mundhwa police have arrested the paramour identified as Vikas Hanumant Kadam (33) under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), 1860. The police have claimed that initially the woman used to tell people that Vikas is her brother and is living with them to support them. As a result, none of the residents had an idea about their relation.

According to the police, the woman’s husband worked with the Indian Army, but he died due to an ailment three years ago. Vikas is a distant relative of the woman and had come to her house on the day of her husband’s demise. Thereafter, he stayed at their house for  a few days to help her. Later he did not go back to his village in Sangli district.

Speaking to dna, police inspector (crime) Rajendra Chavan of Mundhwa police station said, “Vikas and the woman got acquainted, which later converted into a relationship. The woman had bought two cars and was running a transport business with the help of Vikas. He used to look after the mechanical work of the cars, diesel supply and drivers’ salary. Moreover, Vikas also used to help the woman in the house.”

Chavan said, “On Thursday, the woman’s daughter had gone to college, while Vikas and the woman were in their flat. Vikas demanded a physical relationship with the woman. However, she refused, fearing somebody would spot them. As a result, Vikas got angry and had a heated argument with her. Later, he hanged her by attaching a saree to the ceiling fan in the hall.”

Later, Vikas informed neighbours about the incident.
Chavan said, “Some neighbours came to the police station and informed us. We reached the spot and arrested Vikas. Later, we searched the flat and found a suicide note in a book of the woman’s daughter. In her suicide note, the woman has held Vikas responsible for her death. Moreover, Vikas has admitted the crime. We have slapped both sections 302 (punishment for murder) and 306 (Abetment for suicide) under IPC, 1860.”
