PUNE
Singer will attend event organised by Rafi Arts Foundation
Noted yesteryear Bollywood singer Mubarak Begum, who faded into oblivion after a spine surgery, would have a reason to smile again.
Mohammed Rafi Arts Foundation in Pune will organise a special show ‘God Gift Orchestra’ at Balgandharva Rangmandir on July 1 to raise funds for supporting the ailing ghazal singer.
The legendary singer would attend the programme despite ill-health.
The septuagenarian singer is famous for giving various hit numbers, including Kabhi Tanhaiyon Mein Hamari Yaad Ayegi, Mujhko Apne Gale Lagalo Aye Mere Hamrahi, Mere Aansuon Pe Na Muskura, Hum Haale Dil Sunaenge Suniye Ke Na Suniye...’ during the 1960s.
Mubarak Begum’s daughter is bedridden with Parkinson’s disease. Her only son, who is a taxi driver in Mumbai, feeds his family and his mother and sister at they live together in a small house in Jogeshwari, Mumbai. His meagre income is insufficient to run the daily expenses even though Begum receives around Rs1,400 as pension from the government as an artiste.
Chief minister Prithviraj Chavan had presented an aid of Rs1 lakh to her in October 2011. Mohammed Rafi Arts Foundation is founded by fans of Bollywood’s legendary singer Late Mohammed Rafi. The foundation president Iqbal Darbar and Vighnaharta Nyas Trustee Milind Bhoi said, “We are hoping that the fund-raising event will be successful as performing artistes have decided to take part in the orchestra programme for free.”
The duo said that cine-goers and Begum’s fans can chip in by handing over money directly to Begum as she would be attending the programme.
Don’t miss it
Event: Orchestra programme
When: July 1, 9.30 pm onwards
Where: Balgandharva Rangmandir
Noted actor Vikram Gokhale, cartoonist Mangesh Tendulkar, Lijjat Papad group promoter Suresh Kote and Commissioner of Police Gulabrao Pol will attend the programme.
Mubarak Begum, a singer in a class of her own
Despite the presence of Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Shamshad Begum and other singers in the 1950s and 1960s, Mubarak Begum created a niche for herself since her voice had her own identity and she never imitated anyone else.
Noted personalities in the field of music from the city recall the excellent artiste that Mubarak Begum was. Noted music composer Anand Modak said, ``I can cite a song of Mubarak Begum and that is `Mujhako Apne Gale Laga Lo....’ for which Shankar-Jaikishan decided to take her and not Lataji or Ashaji since they could recognise the demand of this song and it was a hit.’’
Modak said Mubarak Begum had a classical base and had fair talim (practice) before she came to the world of film music. He said that since she did not imitate anyone and her voice had her own identity, her songs are not large in number compared to other mainstream singers of those days. He said she was melodious and also had a great deal of confidence and that is why she overcame her nasal twang and presented a whole lot of popular songs in the 1950s and 1960s.
Despite the fact that she got less songs, Modak said, “Whatever she received, she sang so intensely that many of her songs are still remembered by cine-goers.”
Modak said that all cine-goers should come out to see the legend in Mubarak Begum who had created her own stature in the Bollywood of yesteryears.
Iqbal Darbar, founder of Mohammed Rafi Fan’s Group in Pune, said the Hindi film industry is cruel in a sense as it continues to offer only one type of work once it is a hit.
He said the same happened with Mubarak Begum and she was offered kujra dance songs or qawwalis with some exceptions like Nind Ud Jaye Teri, Mere Aasuonpe Na Muskura, Kabhi Tanhaiyonmein Hamari Yaad Ayegi and others.
