A techie who allegedly staged his own kidnapping after losing Rs6 lakh in cricket matches betting, has been tracked down and let off with a warning by the Bhosari police.

Navneet Harishchandra Verma (29) hails from Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh and currently lives at Sarita Sangam Society in Kasarwadi along with his wife. He holds an M Tech degree. His father Harishchandra had filed a missing persons case at Bhosari police station after he had vanished.

SD Kekane, inspector incharge of Bhosari police station, said, “So far, we have not filed a formal case against Verma. His parents do not hold any grudges against him. Besides, filing a case against him would impact his future. Hence, we have decided to let him off with a warning.”

Sub-inspector Sanjay Kandalkar, who is investigating the case, said, “Verma had lost a lot of money while betting on the Indian Premier League (IPL) and had gone bankrupt. He had borrowed money from people to bet hoping that he will win.”

Kandalkar said, “Verma is married since two years and had shifted to Pune, a year back. He left home around 9 am on June 12 saying he was going to his work place. Around 5 pm, his father and brother-in-law Devendra Arya received messages on their mobile stating Verma had been kidnapped. They were asked to deposit of Rs7 lakh in his ICICI bank account immediately.”

Kandalkar added, “Verma called up his father on June 13 saying that the kidnappers had kept him in a thick forest and pleaded to deposit the cash in his account at the earliest. The very next day, his father deposited Rs90,000 in his account. On June 14, his father lodged a complaint with us.”

He said, “We tried tracking down Verma using the mobile tower locations. Locations such as Manjri, Wagholi, Lonikand, Kalyaninagar and Hadapsar were identified through tracking. On Saturday, our team questioned one of Verma’s friends who revealed that Verma was in Ganeshnagar area of Wadgoansheri. Subsequently we approached him and he admitted to have staged his own kidnapping.”
