'Teachers value gratitude from students more than financial incentives'

Teachers consider gratitude from students as the best form of recognition, more than financial incentives or recognition from management, says a survey ‘Pearson Voice of Teacher Survey’, released recently on Teachers’ Day.    

The survey findings conducted by education company, Pearson, partnering with intelligence consulting firm, Spire Research and Consulting, shows that 76% of teachers expressed gratitude from students as the best form of recognition, 60% for financial incentives and 62% for recognition from their management.

Conducted with a purpose to give voice to teacher’s perspective on changing student-teacher dynamics and bring to notice the emerging challenges faced by educators, over 3,262 teachers from schools and higher education institutes in 223 tier I, II and III cities across the 25 Indian states responded to the Voice of Teachers survey.

According to the survey, 72% of teachers feel that students adequately acknowledge them for success, however, there is a dominant belief among 61% of teachers that the level of gratitude has declined over the past 10 years. 

The survey also indicates that the 83% of teachers believe that they are respected in the society. 

Pearson has also announced ‘Thank Your Teacher’, a nationwide initiative encouraging students, past and current, across the country to come forward and thank their teachers. 

Through this initiative, students can send out thank you notes and videos to their favorite faculties by logging onto www.pearsonthankyourteacher.in or sending a ‘Thankyou’ SMS to 56161.

CEO, Pearson Education Services and Tutor Vista, Srikanth Iyer, said, “The survey indicates that teachers value gratitude from the students the most. The trend of students thanking their teachers is on a decline and our unique initiative can help bridge that gap.” 

He further informed that teachers who are thanked through this initiative automatically get invited to send in their nominations for Pearson Teaching Awards.

For Pearson Teaching Awards, the organisation has invited entries from teachers all over the country, under 21 award categories across School and Higher Education.
