Move will reduce traffic congestion
In spite of installing timers at various traffic signals, the Pune traffic police have not been able to reduce traffic congestion at various spots due to lack of synchronisation of the timers. The traffic police have decided to synchronise the timings of 246 traffic signals and provide smooth passage for vehicular traffic at the earliest.
There are total 246 traffic signals in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad together, most of which have timers installed on them. The traffic department is planning to change the timing of these timers in three different stages. Its officials will meet Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) officials this week and decide about the number of traffic signals which need to be reset.Senior police inspector (planning) traffic department, Rajendra Kamire said there were some 181 traffic signals under PMC, out of which 122 have timers. “Now the problem is that some traffic signals have timers for 120 seconds, and need a decrease of time, depending upon the traffic flow of the area. We are going to change the timers of all traffic signals in the city and we also will be installing new timers on the traffic signals wherever it is required.””We are getting various suggestions from citizens for new traffic signals at various junctions, therefore, we have decided that the department will first check whether there is real need for the traffic signal and only then we will install new traffic signals,” Kamire added.
The traffic department will also discuss about spreading awareness among commuters regarding traffic discipline.
What’s the latest App helping cops
For sometime now, the Pune traffic police have been making the most of citizens’ constant updates about traffic troubles on social networking sites, such as What’s App, Facebook, Twitter. They have been using this information to address traffic problems like non-functional traffic signals, traffic congestions, broken down vehicles.
A few years back, the Pune traffic police had started a page on social networking site Facebook to address traffic related problems. Citizens were asked to post photos and problems regarding traffic. Now, according to the traffic police officials, many commuters have started using the mobile application What’s App to inform police about the traffic problems.
Deputy commissioner of police (traffic), Vishwas Pandhare said, “Every day we receive e-mail, updates on Facebook from citizens. Now a new trend is emerging as most of the citizens have started using What’s App for the same.” Pandhare added that the mobile application helped them in acting faster and more effectively.
