Eighteen-year-old hearing impaired student, Preeti Ajbe from Maharashtra Fellowship for Deaf and cleared the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) exam with 79 per cent through sheer hard work and determination.

Tara Meshramkar, Principal of the Maharashtra Fellowship for Deaf, “Preeti is a quiet child but likes interacting with people. She has a quest for knowledge, and loves finding out more about people. She is very good in art.” Preeti’s parents are farmers, while her elder brother works in Pune.

Vandana Metraskar (20) who scored 79.09 per cent, has a mentally ill mother and her elder brother went missing last year. Her father died a few years ago. She lives with her uncle in Solapur.

“Vandana is a good artist and a helpful girl,” said Meshramkar.

Sixteen-year-old Sarika Potsure cleared SSC with 74 per cent marks. Her mother works as domestic help. While Varsha Aaher (19), whose father is a tailor in Aurangabad has also scored 74 per cent. “Sarika likes knitting and doing batik work, while Varsha is very responsible child,” said Meshramkar.

“The credit for their success goes to the teaching staff of the fellowship. Our teachers are dedicated and work for a modest salary,” said Meshramkar.

All the students of the fellowship attend school till 4.15 pm, and then they work in the vegetable garden for an hour.
