A 70-year-old man was killed in a grisly mishap on Laxmi Road on Thursday. The victim was standing on the footpath when a PMPML bus rammed into a car parked along the road. Such was the impact of the collision that the car was pushed on to the footpath and ran over the victim.
The police identified the deceased as Mehmood Gulab Shaikh, a resident of house number 966, Raviwar Peth. A case of rash driving and causing death due to negligence has been filed against the bus driver, Santosh Dattu Kedar (26), under sections 279 and 304 (a) of Indian Penal Code, 1860 and sections 184, 119 and 177 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 on a complaint by local trader Kasim Balemiya Momin.
Santosh a resident of Kesnand near Wagholi, is yet to be arrested, said assistant sub-inspector SP Dange, who is investigating the case.
The police said Santosh was driving the PMPML bus (MH 12 AR 8606) from Dulya Maruti Chowk to Sonya Maruti Chowk at high speed when the mishap took place.
According to the police, the bus first dashed a car (MH 12 AN 8402) that was parked along the road with such force that it rolled on to the footpath and hit Mehmood Gulab Shaikh, who was standing there. Shaikh died instantaneously.
The police said the damage suffered by the car due to the mishap is estimated at Rs70,000. The bus too suffered damage of Rs40,000 in the accident, they added.
PMPML bus mishaps this year

March 15, 2013: A 29-year-old biker was killed when a PMPML bus hit his two-wheeler near Vaibhav Theatre at Hadapsar on Pune-Solapur Road.
March 26, 2013: A 40-year-old interior designer was killed when his motorbike was hit by a PMPML bus near hotel Bhandari on Sinhagad Road.
May 1, 2013: A two-year-old girl was hit by a PMPML bus while she was walking on the footpath at Hadapsar. Her left leg was smashed in the mishap and had to be amputated.
