A 65-year-old became the latest victim of the series of frauds known as ‘Nigerian fraud’, losing Rs10 lakh to the scamsters. They sent him an SMS on his mobile stating that he had won $10 lakh under a mobile lucky draw.
Though the city cyber cell has been sensitising people about the email and SMS fraud known as Nigerian fraud, educated people are falling prey to the fraudsters.
The complaint in the case was registered by Vasant Kane, a resident of Shikshaknagar in Kothrud. The police registered an offence against two people.
The police said these two people were in contact with the complainant by email and instructed him on the steps he had to take to get the “prize money”. “Kane received an SMS on July 29 from the scamsters. It said his mobile number had been selected under an online lottery and he had won $10 lakh,” said inspector SM Babar of the cyber crime cell.
He added, “The scamsters periodically instructed him to deposit money in different bank accounts and assured him that he would get his prize money soon.”
