Doctors at Sassoon General Hospital are irked by what they allege are overnight transfers.

About 50 doctors, including eight senior doctors, many of whom are heads of departments and have served as ex-acting deans have been transferred out of Sassoon General Hospital.

The doctors shunted out of the hospital allege foul play in the move.

“On one hand the government is claiming that they don’t have senior doctors to fill posts and that’s why they extended the date of retirement and on the other hand we are shunted to far off places as we near 58 years. In Mumbai, the doctors have been told to stay put by their seniors but here we are asked to leave,” said a senior doctor.

Three of the eight doctors have already approached the Maharashtra Administrative Tribunal (MAT) for justice, while a couple of others are considering taking up voluntary
retirement.

Doctors who have been transferred include ex-acting dean and head of microbiology department Dr Renu Bharadwaj, head of anaesthesia department Dr Kalpana Kelkar, head of pharmacology department Dr DB Gongane, head of physiology department Dr Vaidya and senior professors including Dr Sudhir and Vandana Dubey from surgery department and Dr Pradeep Sambharey from gynaecology department.

Doctors alleged that when they contacted those who were replacing them at their respective positions, they were told that some doctors hadn’t even applied for transfers.

Three of the eight senior doctors at Sassoon Hospital have been sent to Dhule and the others have been transferred to Solapur, Ambejogai, Miraj and Kolhapur.

Despite repeated attempts to contact them, Dr Pravin Shingare, director of medical education and research and dean of Sassoon General Hospital

Dr Ajay Chandanwale did not respond to queries.
