Exactly a year ago, the 19-year-old Symbiosis college student was found dead under mysterious circumstances, a day after her birthday celebrations.

With the DNA samples matching that of her parents’, CID officials said that her body need not be exhumed. Sanam was a second year fashion design student of Symbiosis college in Vimannagar.

She was found dead on October 3, 2012 in a rental flat in Brahma Sun City in Wadgaonsheri area where she was celebrating her birthday with her friends. On January 23, CID officials lodged a complaint against Sanam’s friend Mohnish Vijay Bolate who had organised the party. As the investigations were on, dna carried a report on May 20, 2013 regarding the botched-up forensic investigations.

About the reportFollowing the goof up, Sanam’s parents applied for the DNA test in Forensic Science Laboratory in Mumbai for an in depth probe. It later extracted the samples of heart and bloods from Sassoon General hospital. The lab also collected Sanam’s parents’ DNA samples. The authorities tested 15 different genetic symptoms of three samples.

The reports of the test is signed by SH Lade, assistant director Forensic Science Laboratory, Mumbai dated April 5, this year. The category states that Amelogenin of Sanam is male (XY), her father Laique is male (XY) and mother Nagina (XX) of female.

Interpretation mentioned that all the 15 different genetic systems analysed with parents did not match either with the maternal or paternal alleles present.

The semen found in the vaginal swab does not match with that of Mohnish. The revelation has put a question mark on the entire investigations.

The goof-upReports prepared by the State Forensic Chemical Laboratory (FCL) in Kalina mentioned that Sanam had a male heart. Report also stated that Sanam’s DNA does not match with her parents. In November, 2012, department of pathology of B J Medical College and Sassoon General hospital reserve report mentioned Sanam’s sex as ‘male’ and claimed that her stomach, liver and blood contained alcohol.

Criticism from parentsSince the beginning of the investigations, Sanam’s parents have been criticising Pune police for shoddy investigation after the police claimed that she died of alcohol overdose

Sanam’s mother Nagina said, “The city police have made this case weak. We had to ask to handover the case to the CID. We hope that this year at least the culprits will be behind the bars and my daughter will get justice.”

Officials speakThe second report prepared by state laboratory is positive and the second samples of blood collected from Sanam’s parents are matching with Sanam preserved viscera. Sanam’s parents had raised some queries about the earlier report which mentioned her heart to be that of a male. We are taking help of the experts’ panel of doctors from JJ hospital in Mumbai to clear the goof-up
