Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana President and Lok Sabha MP Raju Shetty on Saturday demanded revaluation of cooperatives sold due to being bankrupt in last 15 years. He demanded filing cases against concerned office bearers of the cooperatives if those are sold below the prevailing market prices.

He was addressing the Save Cooperative sector (Sahakaar Bachav) conference organized by Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana. Expert from Gujarat Jayantibhai Patel, former chairman of the Malegaon Cooperative sugar factory Chandrarao Tavare, Former president of the state cooperative sugar federation Prithviraj Jachak, state president of the Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana Sadabhau Khot and others were present on the dais.

Shetty pointed out that it has come to the fore that state cooperative bank has sold out cooperative sugar factories without floating any tender for the same. Questioning selling of sugar factories and the handloom mills in cooperative sector, Shetty said that irregularities can not be ruled out in these transactions and there is a need for inquiry in to all such deals which have taken place in last 15 years during the Congress-NCP rule in the state.

Patel expressed the need for transparent functioning of cooperatives and pointed out that even though cooperative sector was gift of Maharashtra to the Nation, Maharashtra was not running it efficiently. He said that there was no political interference in the functioning of cooperatives in Gujarat.The conference passed resolutions which are as follows-Vasantdada Sugar Institute should not have representatives of Private sugar mills on its Governing council and board of directors.The chief minister should be the president of the VSI.Income Tax should not be levied on cooperatives since those are run on `no profit no loss' basis.Sugar should be excluded from forward treading list to prevent sudden price rise.Ends/shailendra
