Pune police fail to study juvenile crime chart

Soon after Dighi resident Shubham Shirke was kidnapped and murdered by his three teenaged friends, the top brass of the Pune police had ordered a complete analytical study of all juvenile crime in the city. The plan was to evolve a strategy to curb crimes involving juveniles. However, six months after the study was ordered, no steps have been taken to complete it.

Shirke was kidnapped and murdered by his friends on March 31. A week after that, concerned by the spurt in juvenile crimes, the top brass of the city police had asked senior inspectors of all police stations to collect information on juvenile criminals in the city.
According to the order, the senior inspector of every police station was to collect the last three years’ information on juvenile criminals. They were also to compile details of the cases in which juveniles had been held.

The then additional commissioner of police (crime) AD Shinde told DNA, “We have asked every police station in-charge to collect juvenile criminals’ information. After getting the details, we are going to study the present scenario of juvenile criminals in the city. Accordingly, we will chalk out an action plan.”

However, six months later, the study has not been completed. Shinde has been transferred long since and even the then police commissioner Meeran  Chadha Borwankarhas been transferred to the prison department.
