Pune lass doing her bit to cleanse the young minds

Being a shining example of youth awareness, 16-year-old Kothrud resident, Renu Mulay has created an imaginative tableau for Lord Ganesh hosted at her home. She has juxtaposed the news clippings of the recently busted ‘chillar party’, where 800 underage children were being served alcohol with photographs of achievers such as Abdul Kalam, Sachin Tendulkar and Saina Nehwal.

Renu, a class XII student of Brihan Maharashtra Commerce College (BMCC), who has been making decorations on social issues for Ganeshotsav in her home each year, has chosen the theme of the minors caught drinking at the party in Hotel River View, Koregaon Park. She said, “I am praying to Lord Ganesh to instill better sense among my peers.”

To use the incident as a backdrop, Renu has shown some toys in a swimming pool as if children are drinking alcohol from it. She has also made a collage of various news articles of the ‘chillar party’ incident. On the other side of the Ganesha idol, Renu has put up photographs of India’s achievers from sports and other fields to show real idols of the country.

Renu told DNA, “Through this decoration, I wanted to show that the young generation should follow personalities like Abdul Kalam and Saina Nehwal instead of adopting the wrong path. I am hoping Lord Ganesha will spread some common sense among our generation and the emulate these famous people.” Renu’s decorations are eco-friendly too, as she has used paper for most part, with the Ganesh idol being made of shadu clay.

In the past, Renu had dealt with social issues such as the Kargil war, Team Anna’s agitation for Jan Lokpal bill, potholes on Pune’s streets and fight against swine flu.
