In an advertisement placed in local newspapers, the FTII has sought applications to appoint two psychiatrists (one male and one female) on urgent basis. While the FTII authorities refused to divulge what prompted the move, the website claims the shrinks will be required for supporting emotional and behavioural health of FTII students and staff.

While renumeration will be petty (just Rs10,000 per month and appointment fees as per government rates), it is the idea that the institute that houses a staff of about 250 and has 350 students that raised eyebrows.

The students are not entirely aware of this initiative. When dna asked them about the appointment of psychiatrists, one of them said, “We have no idea about it yet.”

Another student welcomes the  idea. “I have been here for a year and I don’t find this environment that pressurising. But there are a few students who suffer from minor depression and if the psychiatrists are going to help them, it will be good,” he said. Both students didn’t want to disclose their identities.

FTII director DJ Narain remained tightlipped when dna sought details on why this was being done.
