The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), Pune division, on Tuesday arrested a police naik, Nivrutti Eknath Gogawale (50), from Samartha police station for accepting a bribe of Rs2,000 for passport verification work.
The arrest was made on a complaint by one Sohail Yasin Shaikh (28), a businessman from Bhavani Peth.
According to the police, Gogawale, who lives in Somwar Peth police lines, handled the work of issuing police verification certificates to candidates applying for passports in areas under Samartha police station.
Sohail’s father Shaikh Yasin Haju and his mother had applied for passports as they wanted to go on Haj.
“Sohail’s parents needed a police verification certificate for getting the passport. Whenever Sohail would visit the police station, Gogawale would avoid issuing the certificates citing various reasons. Last week, Gogawale asked for Rs3,000 to issue the certificates. After negotiations, Gogawale agreed on Rs2,000,” said deputy superintendent (ACB) Rajendra Galande.
Meanwhile, Sohail approached the ACB and lodged a complaint with them.
A team led by Galande laid a trap at the police station on Tuesday afternoon and arrested Gogawale while accepting the bribe money.
