PMC to carry out survey of dangerous structures

While the number of incidents of dangerous structures collapsing and claiming lives is on the rise, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) does not have any concrete plan to curb such incidents.

On the backdrop of the recent incident where four persons lost their lives after a compound wall collapsed on a house in Yerawada, all that the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) administration is going to do is to carry out one more survey of dangerous structures in the city.

Mayor Chanchala Kodre asked the PMC administration to carry out the survey and submit a report on it. Kodre gave the directions to the administration at the general body meeting of PMC held on Tuesday.

While the issue of the Yerawada mishap was being discussed, commissioner Mahesh Pathak said there are 170 families living in the slum where the incident took place. “Since the slum has come up after 2006, these families cannot be rehabilitated under the Slum Rehabilitation Authority in the same area, according to the rules. However, if these families agree, they can be rehabilitated in other areas,” said Pathak.

However, the administration failed to give any concrete plan to avoid such types of mishaps in the future. The corporators said the Yerawada mishap is not an isolated case, but there have been cases in the past where people lost their lives after dangerous structures collapsed.  After the discussion on the issue, Kodre asked the civic administration to carry out the survey of dangerous structures including buildings, old wadas, retaining and compounding walls and submit a report in the house.

June 20: Two persons including a 75-year-old woman and her 17-year-old granddaughter lost their lives after a portion of the wall of the 80-year-old Shinde Wada collapsed in Kasba Peth area
