Noted epigraphist, numismatist and former professor at Deccan College Dr Shobhana Gokhale (85) died after a prolonged illness in Pune. She is survived by a son, daughter and grandchildren. The last rites were performed at Vaikunth crematorium.

With more than 10 books and 150 research papers to her name, Gokhale has been credited with discovering the trade route between Nane Ghat and Paithan. She served as president of Bharat Itihaas Sanshodhak Mandal and member of the prestigious Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute (BORI). 

She joined Deccan College in 1960 and worked for almost five decades there in her chosen field. She was felicitated at national and international conferences. She was also formerly president of Numismatic Society of India.
