PCMC to conduct survey to identify the faulty ones
With the speed breakers in the twin town turning out risky for the commuters, the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has decided to carry out a detailed survey to mend them.
There was a huge outcry against the faulty and ‘illegal’ speed breakers. Citizens complained that nearly 500 of the 2,000 speed breakers are built against the norms.
“Accordingly, PCMC has issued letters to each engineering department of four zonal wards — A, B, C and D — asking them to start the survey work,” said assistant engineer Bapusaheb Gaikwad, adding that it will take a few months to complete the survey.
The survey will be followed by corrective measures after referring to the data of the traffic police.
As per the primary observation, there are around 2,000 legitimate speed breakers and innumerable illegal ones in the twin town which have been made against the Indian Road Congress norms.
Due to the inappropriate shapes and sizes of the speed breakers, commuters have complained of backaches and also large number of mishaps.
Case study: A victim of faulty construction
Tanabai Nivruti Elvande (50), a servant of Jnana Prabhodini High School, lost her life in a road mishap recently. The Nigdi resident fell off her son’s bike at Triveninagar Chowk on Nigdi-Talwade Road.
Her son Somnath Elvande, who also works in the same school as a peon, said, “It was evening and I couldn’t notice the speed breaker as there was no reflector and hence failed to judge the speed. My mother fell and sustained head injuries. She later died in a private hospital.”
Despite the fatal accident, the civic body has failed to take necessary measures or put reflectors on Triveninagar speed breaker. Later the local residents themselves removed the speed breaker to avoid further accidents.

Citizens' group fills in for PCMC
Two years ago, Chakravyuh Mitra Mandal, a citizens’ group, carried out a survey of six chowks in Nigdi and Akurdi area. The mandal activists observed that around 1,200 vehicles passed each chowk every hour at a speed of 80-90 km per hour. At least eight to nine accidents were reported at these spots.
