A murder suspect has been arrested for outraging a woman guard at Yerawada Prison when he had gone to meet a friend lodged at the jail on Monday.
Prashant Dharwadkar (24), a resident of Apte Colony in Warje Malwadi was rounded up by the jail sentries and handed over to the Yerawada police.
A case of manhandling government servant, outraging modesty and breach of peace was filed against him after the sentry, Shubhangi Mane (25), a resident of Nagpurchawl in Yerawada, lodged a formal complaint at Yerawada police station.
Senior inspector Kishor Jadhav at Yerawada police station said, “Dharwadkar has been a history sheeter and had been arrested in a case of murder and rioting by Warje Malwadi police. He was recently granted bail. He visited the jail to meet his friend Datta Marne, who has been arrested by Paud police in a separate murder case.”
He added, “Mane asked Dharwadkar to furnish his identity proof at the entrance of the visitor’s room at the jail. An angry Dharwadkar told her that she would come to know who he was if she went through the jail records and subjected her to a flow of abuses. He also issued threat of dire consequences to her.”
Dharwadkar was produced in the court of a judicial magistrate (first class) on Tuesday. The magistrate remanded him in magisterial custody. He was later granted bail.
