Police commissioner Gulabrao Pol deciding to revive ‘Mission Mrityunjay’, the ambitious project of former police commissioner Satyapal Singh which was discarded after his transfer. As part of the mission, the Pune police will now rope in college students to collect intelligence on terror activities and other crimes in the city.

The project involves forming groups of college going student volunteers under leadership of police officers and using these groups to collect the intelligence in the city. 

Pol said, “The Mrityunjay clubs will help develop communal and social harmony among the youth. They will also help in strengthening the bond between the police and the youth. These students will act as the ears and eyes of the police and will alert police if they notice any suspicious activities in the city.”

The mission was started by Singh in 2008. Mrityunjay clubs were established at all 122 colleges and 86 schools of the city. 16,434 professors, teachers and students were also part of it.

According to the new plan, the college principal will have to appoint a nodal officer to create awareness among the students. He/ She has to give precautionary measures like what to do when they notice any suspicious activities or object in the city.

Senior police officer said, “These appointed officers at schools and colleges will organise lectures by retired police, army officers along with college principals, editors, writer, social worker and doctors. They have also been asked to conduct at least one meeting in a month.”
