The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), which was appointed by the PMC to prepare the project report for development of Pune metro rail, had suggested two routes — one from Pimpri-Chinchwad to Swargate and the other from Vanaz to Ramwadi.

The Vanaz to Ramwadi metro rail route has already been approved by the PMC standing committee and the state government and the proposal is now pending with the Union government.

The 16.589-km route from Pimpri-Chinchwad to Swargate will have 15 stops. Of the route, 7.5 km is located in Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation limits with six stops and around 9 km falls under PMC and Khadki Cantonment Board limits. Elevated metro rail will be on 4.78-km stretch and the rest underground.
