Let the rivers be

Taking the thought of environment conservation forward, the residents of Amar Renaissance in Sopan Baug, have brought in the concept of eco-friedly Ganesha in their homes and also teach the same to their children.

Priti Bhandari, one of the members of the society, said, “We have been celebrating the fest in an eco-friendly manner since four years. All the children of the society come together and craft their own idols.”

She added that this year, renowned artist Pramod Kamble held a workshop to teach the children of the society to make idols using sadu mati (river mud).

“We enjoyed every bit of making the idol and realised that we have a creative streak in us too,” said the children.

River mud is bio-degradable and hence does not do any harm to the environment by polluting the water.

“During the festival, water pollution is caused due to the immersion process. We do not want any such hazards and hence we encourage the children to follow eco-friendly ways,” said Darshana Raisoni, another resident of the society. The residents choose to immerse the idols in a bucket of water as the same clay can be dried and reused next year.
