NCP president Sharad Pawar on Saturday said there was no need to worry about his oral cancer and he is no longer required to visit the doctors for a follow-up.

Pawar said he had overcome cancer due to his will power and determination and added that he had inherited the fighting spirit from his mother. He recalled that his mother, who was hit by a wild bull once, fought back bravely despite the fact that her thigh bone was crushed in the incident.

Pawar said she not only started working in the field but also learnt how to ride a four-wheeler and speak in English after Pawar’s brother married a foreigner.

Pawar said he was asked by his friend Dr Ravi Bapat to undergo a check-up after he noticed the swelling on the right side of the mouth when Pawar had gone to file nomination papers for 2004 Lok Sabha elections. Pawar said he underwent a biopsy and within three days, underwent a cancer surgery. He also recalled that after making enquiries in the US, he was told that the best surgeon in the US was in Mumbai at that time. The same surgeon, Dr Sultan Pradhan, performed a surgery on him in Mumbai in 2004.

Pawar recalled that undergoing chemotherapy after the surgery was another traumatic experience as teeth on the right side were removed and tongue as well as a portion of lips was burnt during the treatment. He recalled, “When I went for a follow-up after three months, the doctors asked me to come back after six months.

Later, they asked to come back after a year and again after three years. Now, I have been told not to come again for a check-up and I have overcome cancer.’’

Pawar thanked his friend, late Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, who was the chairman of Rajya Sabha, and had requested opposition leaders not to ask any question to Pawar as he was advised against talking when the monsoon session of parliament was on in 2004. He also thanked opposition MPs, friends and gave credit to his wife Pratibha and daughter Supriya who stood by him during the hour of crisis. Pawar said, “After reading my battle against cancer, many patients may get the determination to overcome the disease.’’
