Husband's suicide: Woman's bail plea rejected

Plaint registered only after victim's mother met police chief

The court of additional sessions judge VB Kulkarni rejected a woman’s anticipatory bail after her 31-year-old husband allegedly committed suicide at his residence suspecting her extramartial affair with neighbour. The couple has two daughters. The police have filed a case of abetment to suicide against the woman and her relatives.

Deceased Vikram Bhosale of Range Hills in Khadki allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan on November 28, 2012. Khadki police station registered a complaint filed by Vikram’s mother Sandhya only after she met Pune police commissioner Gulabrao Pol. A complaint was registered on June 15, 2013 for abetment to suicide against deceased’s wife Priyanka, her mother Aruna Jadhav and three relatives.

According to the police, Priyanka and her four family members had filed bail pleas claiming that they have been falsely implicated in the case. Rejecting the bail pleas, Judge Kulkarni said, “The offence is very serious. The investigation agency had failed to take cognizance of the incident reported to the police by deceased’s mother Sandhya in a complaint. Investigation officer (IO) produced papers and has informed about the specific allegations of adultery between Priyanka and a certain William Mathew. This act amounts to instigation, abetment for the commission of suicide by Vikram. The police failed to take action on the basis of complaint received.”

According to the prosecution, deceased Vikram had married Priyanka on June 21, 2004. and have two daughters. In February 2010, deceased Vikram allegedly found one book in which his wife Priyanka and next-door neighbour William used to exchange their feelings. Later he caught them red-handed having illicit relationship.

Later, she gave in writing that she will not continue to stay with him. In October, while returning home, Vikram found his wife along with William. Both had heated arguments and Vikram beat her up. The matter was settled in police station. In November during Diwali, Priyanka went to her maternal home and when Vikram went to bring her home, he was beaten up by Priyanka and her parents.   

MRA criticises police dept

Men’s Rights Association (MRA) founder and president Atit Rajpara said, “Whenever male member approaches a police station they are ridiculed stating how can wife and in-laws beat you? According to National Crime Records Bureau, more men commit suicide due to family relationships. ”
