Pune: Tragedy struck a Holi party when a boat carrying five friends capsized in the waters of Pavana river near Bhatnagar on Monday afternoon. The friends were busy drinking liquor in the boat when it turned turtle. One of the five partygoers was feared drowned while the remaining four were rescued.
The man feared dead has been identified as Nagesh Sasane (33), a resident of Pimpri. Lifeguards attached to the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) fire brigade department frantically searched for him till late evening but in vain. His friends Manoj Hatthe (35) of Bouddhnagar Pimpri, Vinod Gaikwad of Bhimnagar Pimpri and two others were rescued by the fire brigade.
According to fire brigade officials, “The boat belongs to Hatthe and he had called his friends to celebrate Holi on the boat. When the party was on, all friends started indulging in rowdy behaviour, which included jumping and careless body movements on the boat. Because of the sudden movement, the boat capsized, throwing all of them in the water. Hatthe himself rescued two of them, while Sasane disappeared in the deep waters.” Arvind Jagtap, sub-officer of PCMC fire brigade said, “Before we arrived, Hatthe rescued two of them. After three hours of continuous search, we could trace the boat, but the person who drowned is still missing.”
