Ask any artist and he will agree with the fact that a certain dance form will only strengthen few particular muscles and not make the entire body flexible. The same reason prompted Gunjan Rawat structure a specialised yoga workshop for the dancers. Rawat’s specialised yoga includes specific asanas and exercises to complement the dance styles. The workshop is a mix of demonstrations of various asanas and discussions. It begins with a warm-up session called sun salutations in yoga, and graduates to some basic and advanced balancing postures. The session is followed by practicing poses that help in relieving lower back pain, discomfort in the knees and hamstrings injuries that are commonly seen in dancers.“Flexibility, core strength, and muscle tone are the most obvious goals. Yoga improves balance and stamina. These things can combine to create a stronger, more confident, and graceful performance,” says Rawat.
