Ganeshotsav 2012: Traffic curbs in peths from Saturday

Although police commissioner Gulabrao Pol had said that the roads in downtown city will be closed for vehicles at night from the first day of the festival to accommodate people thronging the city roads to watch decorations of Ganesh mandals, the curbs will not begin till Saturday.

Deputy commissioner of police (traffic) Vishwas Pandhare while speaking to media persons said, “Anticipating the rush of devotees watching decorations of Ganesh mandals, we would close roads in downtown parts of the city at night from September 22 to September 29.”

The roads which will be closed for vehicular traffic at night time during the festival would include thoroughfares like Laxmi Road, Bajirao Road, Shivaji Road and Kelkar Road. The traffic police have appealed to local residents to use bylanes or park vehicles at various parking areas.

Deputy commissioner of police (traffic) Vishwas Pandhare said, “The rush of devotees will start from September 22 and will remain till September 29. Hence,  we have decided to close main roads of downtown Pune for traffic during night for smooth passage of crowd. Along with

the police force, we will be deploying 150 volunteers to help traffic police in handling traffic.”

The traffic police have also identified 18 locations where people can park their vehicles. Pandhare said.
