Party’s women’s youth wing draws civic body’s attention to scarcity and poor condition of facilities in various areas of city.
The public toilet facility in Ghorpade Peth was restarted after the women’s youth wing of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) drew the Pune Municipal Corporation’s attention to the scarcity and poor condition of public toilets in various areas of the city.
Women’s youth wing representatives Manali Bhilare, Shruti Joshi, Rucha Shinde, Rani Shelke, Archana Ghare, Karishma Hagavane and Ashwini Pawar met city mayor Vaishali Bankar, Rajya Sabha MP Vandana Chavan and municipal commissioner Mahesh Pathak to discuss the issue.
Bankar immediately summoned the ward officer and instructed him to start the Ghorpade Peth public toilet that was closed down.
Bhilare informed media persons that her team surveyed public toilets, especially those for women, in Sarasbaug, Peshvebaug, Ghorpade Peth, Tulshibaug, Pune railway station, ST stand, Swargate ST stand and Shivajinagar ST stand.
Pointing out the need for public toilets, Bhilare said, “The condition of the public toilets in all these areas was so bad that no one even dared to enter them. There was no water in the toilets also.
Besides, the attendants of the toilet at Peshve Park went for lunch during rush hours and the toilet was closed for an hour. “Since Ganesh festival attracts many people from outside the city, it is very important to have public toilets during the festival. We have asked the civic administration to erect more public toilets during the 10 days of the festival,” she added.
NCP activists said that they would approach Ganesh mandals, especially the prominent ones, for providing mobile toilet facility during the 10-day festival.
