In a praiseworthy gesture, Khilarewadi Tarun Mandal located in Erandwane has donated two close-circuit television (CCTV) cameras to Deccan police station in the wake of the recent serial blasts on Jungli Maharaj Road.
Last year, the mandal had offered monetary help to underprivileged children in the area during its Ganeshotsav celebrations.
Speaking to DNA, the mandal’s head Hanumant Pawar said, “Pune has become a sensitive place after being targetted twice by terrorist organisations. Even the incidents of youths snatching gold chains from senior citizens are on the rise. Hence, we thought to donate CCTVs in the interest of public safety.”
The Deccan Police will manage and monitor the CCTVs. The mandal gave Rs28,000 for purchasing the CCTVs from its collected donation of Rs3.5 lakh. Besides adopting five underprivileged children from the area and supporting their educational expenses in 2011, the mandal is also bearing the educational expenses of two daughters of a slum dweller who died some months ago. It also provided their mother the job of a housemaid.
