PUNE
Collegians, who have volunteered to help the city police during the Ganesh festival, have been trained for 10 days by the police in crowd control and anti-terrorist operations.
A total of 5,000 collegians, who have volunteered to help the city police during the Ganesh festival, have been trained for 10 days by the police in crowd control and anti-terrorist operations. The concluding ceremony of the programme was held at Ganesh Kala Krida Kendra on Friday.
Speaking at the function, police commissioner Gulabrao Pol said, “During Ganeshotsav, devotees throng the city and it becomes difficult for the police to control them. Incidents like chain snatching, petty thefts and others crimes too take place during the period. With this additional strength of 5,000 students, we will find it easier to ensure law and order.”
Pune University’s vice chancellor Vasudeo Namdeo Gade said, “The University of Pune has more than 7 lakh students. This year, after a request by the city police, we have provided them 5,000 student volunteers. If need arises, we shall provide more volunteers.”
Assistant police commissioner (ACP) Rajendra Bhamre said, “The students will be issued a red T-shirt, blue cap, identity card and a whistle. The girls will be on the roads from 5 pm to 10 pm while the boys will work till midnight. They will be deployed in areas near their residence.”
Momita Das (20), a student of FYBA from Modern College staying in Sangvi said, “I learnt many useful things during the training. Now, I would be able to use the knowledge and also share it with my friends. We were taught how to identify a suspect, how to defend ourselves and given an overview of laws. Now, we will use the knowledge that the police have imparted to us.”
Sana Shaikh (19), a resident of Yerawada studying FYB Com in Poona College, said, “I was apprehensive about policemen. But the close interaction during the training removed all prejudices. Now, I plan to join police force. During the training session, we learnt about the importance of Ganesh Chaturthi, what is aarti and why immersion takes place. I am going to enjoy the festival along with police on the field.”
Mohammad Zakariya Ramzan Chaudhari (18) and Shaikh Ashique Idris (18), F Y B Com students of Poona College said, “We were trained in handling the crowd in chaotic conditions. All these things are difficult. We normally curse policemen but now, I realise they are the real heros.”
