If autonomy is granted by the UGC, it would allow the college to disassociate itself from the present university affiliation system and develop its own academic programmes.

While confirming the approval, vice chancellor Dr Wasudev Gade said the decision to approve the proposal of Fergusson College was taken at the academic council meeting.

He said that since they have approved it, the proposal will be sent to the UGC. The commission will be sending its own panel to assess the college and after scrutiny, the final call will be taken.

He added that a committee was set up by the varsity to assess the 128-year-old college’s potential to become autonomous. The committee submitted its report to the academic council and it was approved. When contacted, Fergusson College principal Ravindrasinh Pardeshi said the college is yet to receive any official communication from the varsity officials.
