Engineering student starts 'MUNing' culture in Pune

A second year student of the College of Engineering Pune (CoEP), Mayur Ahuja, has started an organisation called The Pune Model United Nations (PMUN), a stimulation of the United Nations, where students role play as diplomats of various countries and participate in debates.

Mayur says that their main motto is to make students aware of the concept of MUNing. “Pune does not have much exposure to the MUNing culture and students here are oblivious to it. Our aim is to change that. We want students to know about this because it would help them in so many ways.”

Talking about the project, Mayur further explained that they have divided the committees, such as Security Council, World Trade Organisation, Counter Terrorism committee and others, according to age groups so that the students feel comfortable debating. The age groups are- 11 to 15 and 16  to 22 . Mayur said, “The students will be given agendas within their specific committee on which they will be debating over 2 days.  Each student represents a country and each committee has about 40 delegates. During the course of PMUN, students will learn the foreign and national policies of that countries and learn how to make strategies, form allies, etc.” 

PMUN will give school and college-going students a platform to improve their debating skills and team work. 

At present, Mayur’s team is looking for support for students to participate and learn from the MUN conferences. With this, the project targets donating the generated funds to the needy.  (For more information log on to - www.punemodelun.org)
