Dowry-invoked suicide case: Hubby denied bail

The bail plea of a software techie arrested by the police for allegedly killing his wife for dowry demands was rejected by special judge Prachi Kulkarni on Monday.

The techie had claimed that his wife hadn’t committed suicide due to dowry demands but had an extramarital affair which led him to consume 100 sleeping tablets.

Software techie Vijay Thorat, a resident of Solana Project in Thergoan, was arrested by Hinjewadi police on November 18 under relevant sections of Indian Penal Code comprising murder and ill-treatment.

The incident came to light when deceased Vaishali’s father Ramrao Vadkule lodged a complaint with the police. While filing the chargesheet, the police lodged a suicide invoked dowry death after they found bank accounts transaction wherein the deceased’s father transferred money to Thorat.

As per the prosecution case, “Complainant Vadkule’s daughter Vaishali was married to Vijay on November 25, 2007 and settled in Nanded. Later they moved to Pune for job. Vijay had purchased a row house in Nanded and was demanding Rs2 lakh from Vaishali and accordingly her father paid the amount by transferring it in Vijay’s account.”

Thorat had moved an application on behalf of lawyer Sagar Bhosale. The application mentioned, “Deceased Vaishali had an extramarital affair with another man and there were several communication between the two of them but the man was not ready to marry her. Secondly, despite four years, Vaishali was not able to conceive and Vijay was spending money on her treatment. Vaishali committed suicide in another room and there was a huge noise as the ceiling fan on which she had hung herself had fallen.

After seeing this incident, Vijay went to a hotel and consumed 100 sleeping pills and cut his wrist to end his life. The case of dowry death is registered by pressurising the police and this is a clear case of suicide by wife.”

Judge Kulkarni observed, “Going through the postmortem report, it is understood that the deceased died due to hanging. However, there were few injury marks on her head and chest which indicates it’s a murder. Though Vijay noticed that his wife is lying dead, he left the house. This conduct of Vijay speaks volumes. Vijay had claimed that he had consumed 100 sleeping tablets, but the doctor did not notice any such thing. There are no injuries on his hands.”
