Brave nun puts up tough resistance, foils rape attempt in Pune

A 29-year-old nun staying at a hostel in Bund Garden area had a horrifying experience when a thief entered her room to steal valuables. On seeing her asleep, he tried to rape her. However, the brave woman put up a great resistance and the thief had to flee. 

The incident came to light when the victim lodged a complaint at Bund Garden police station on Saturday evening. Based on the complaint, the police nabbed Suresh Tulsiram Bhegawale (27), a resident of Tadiwala Road. He has been booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, 1860. The police claim the victim was in a shock and unable to recall the incident and so the complaint was registered after two days.

However, the culprit dropped his ATM card at the spot, which helped the police identify him.

UN Sonawane, inspector incharge of Bund Garden police station said, “The incident took place on Thursday at 12.30 am when the victim was sleeping. Bhegawale entered the premises to steal valuables. He found the victim’s room unlocked, entered it and gagged her. But the victim resisted and they entered into a scuffle. She kicked him hard and pushed him. He fled after which victim called the police control room.”

He added, “We started searching for the culprit. Next morning, our team visited the building and we recovered the ATM card that had been dropped by the culprit. While our staff was leaving the premises, we found a man who was limping. His activities appeared suspicious and we detained him. Later, he admitted having done the crime. He said that in attempting to flee, he had jumped from the first floor of the building, which resulted in a fracture in his hip. As a result, he could not escape. He is undergoing treatment at Sassoon Hospital for the fracture. On his discharge, we will arrest him.”
